Chasing 122, India got to the target in the 15th over with 8 wickets to spare.
India kept a check on Sri Lanka’s scoring rate throughout with Kranti Gaud and Deepti Sharma picking up early wickets against Sri Lanka. No Sri Lanka batter could capitalise on a start as the visitors finished on 121/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Earlier, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to field first vs Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lanka in the first of the five-match T20I series. This is the first time the Indian women’s team are taking the field after winning the ODI World Cup on November 2.
In addition to the veterans like Harmanpreet, Smriti Mandhana, Jemmimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma, all eyes will be on the next generation of players in young batting prospect G Kamalini and left-arm spinner Vaishanavi Sharma. The former has shown her abilities with the bat for the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League, and the latter has made it into the side through her performance in the U-19 World Cup and domestic T20 tournaments. While Kamalini has to wait a bit longer, Vaishnavi made her India debut and bowled an economical spell of 0/16 in her four overs.

As per the visitors, all eyes will be on ambidextrous spinner Shashnini Gimhani, who is touted to be the next superstar alongside seamers Kawya Kavindi and Rashmika Sewwandi.

Happy with how things went with bat and a ball, yes, but fielding is something that we are really working hard; I just don't know why we keep dropping catches. Next match will come up with an even better approach. Yes the conditions were wet, no doubt about it, but it's not an excuse. It is something which we really need to think about because in crucial matches, these things can cost us.

"For me, it is important to understand the conditions. To be honest, it was slightly sticky, not as flat as we thought it would be, but I was just in good touch. So I just wanted to continue that. And my mindset is simple. I feel I bat the best when I'm just blank and react to the ball, and that's what I was doing. I didn't think of the score either. Just thought of reacting to the ball and playing according to merit."
Jemimah Rodrigues finishes it off for India, remaining unbeaten on 69. It comes off a misfield from an otherwise good fielding display by Sri Lanka but not much else went in favour of the visitors.

A 100.8kph delivery from Kavindi no matter, Jemi is already in position to play the scoop. Not just an offside masterclass, just an overall masterclass tonight. Harman comes close to hitting her first boundaries of the night, nails a pull shot through midwicket and then plays a lovely straight drive too. But both fielded.
In fact, there is a complete breakdown in communication between Jemi and Harman after that second shot as the former wanted to come back for two but the captain showing no interest. But the throw from deep is to the wrong end. Kawya didn't collect it either.
India not taking too many chances understandably against Inoka Ranaweera, steady six-run over against the veteran.
Just 14 more needed from 42 balls.
FOUR FOURS IN THE OVER AND HALF CENTURY FOR JEMI!
Absolutely fittingly, Jemimah Rodrigues brings up a 34-ball half century with a four through the offside. She's been brilliant with her late cuts and drives again. And just for variety, she scores another four through the offside but this one off a reverse sweep off a full toss. Earlier in the over it was a square cut and last ball of the over, an outside. 32 runs in 2 overs conceded by Gimhani.
Harman and Jemi happy to milk singles in Athapaththu's over just after the drinks break. India are not breaking a sweat in this run-chase.

Harmanpreet Kaur survives a huge LBW shout in Ranaweera's over. The ball kept low, skidded through and looked pretty much in line with the stumps. But Harmanpreet had managed to get inside edge on it. SL burn a review.
Kaveesha continues from the other end and Jemi plays another wonderful late cut for four. That shot is her specialty.
TRAP SET AND WORKS! Interesting field in play for left-arm spinner to the left-hand batter. SL keep mid on inside the circle but have a deep extra cover. Mandhana dances down the pitch perhaps wanting to hit this down the ground but goes wider than she'd have liked. And it is taken safely.

Kavisha into the attack and Jemimah plays another wonderful late cut for four. Used the pace that was on offer, played it as late as possible. India cruising.
Rodrigues goes wide of offstump to play a premeditated sweep off Inoka's first ball. Dangerous ploy, but puts it away for a double. Tidy from the veteran spinner, just 4 off that over but SL need wickets.
Inoka Ranaweera into the attack, she bowled a ripper to dismiss Jemimah at the World Cup in Guwahati. The Indian batter would need be on guard here.
Gimhani comes into the attack with her left-arm wrist-spin against Jemimah Rodrigues. And the right-handed better starts the over with a delightful square cut for four. Next ball, she brings out the inside out shot through cover. A no ball, that. Jemi can't convert the free hit, finds the fielder at cover.
A strong start to the chase by India as powerplay comes to a close with another four, Smriti lofting one over mid on.
And Smriti Mandhana finds her touch in that over. Couple of brilliant boundaries through the offside. And she brings up yet another landmark. The second batter to score 4000 T20I runs.

Great fielding at the deep to prevent a boundary for Jemimah. Meanwhile, Smriti looking a bit rusty here early on, like she actually did earlier during the recent World Cup.

Malki thinks that was close but actually, Jemimah plays that shot so well. Speedy delivery, just outside off, Jemimah plays a late cut for four. The keeper was standing up, that helped too. A sharp double earlier in that over too.
Another loose shot from Smriti, this time gets the inside edge and nearly chops one on to the stumps. Goes for four. Kawya then bowls a short ball with a deep midwicket in place but Smriti's pull falls short. Impressive first over from the pacer.
Shafali gone! She looked in good touch but unfortunately flicks one uppishly and Shashini takes a really nice low catch at square leg. That was on the pads, there to be hit but Shafali found the fielder.

Kawya from the other end, with her right-arm medium pace. Nice smooth action, 111.8kph first ball. That's sharp!
A loose shot from Smriti Mandhana early on, slower length ball from Malki, the opener shapes for a pull that is completely mistimed. The fielder at midwicket should have done better at trying to catch but it wouldn't have mattered anyway, turned out to be a no ball. Shafali gets the free hit to start her innings and hits a four. Finishes the over with another boundary too, lovely drive through extra cover. Walked into that shot.
Deepti concedes a rare boundary at the start of the over, Kaushini nails a nice slog sweep over mid on fielder. The innings ends with another run out, the third of the night for Sri Lanka, but one you could understand as they tried to steal two of the last ball.

Another run out! That took forever but we finally got there. Great call from Amanjot to go for the batting end with her throw. The bat is deemed to be in the air as Nilakshiva dived. India pleasantly surprised by that one.

RUN OUT! Another dropped catch is followed immediately by a wicket. This time Kranti is sharp on the field, releases a bullet throw from short point and Vishmi is slow to return to the crease. Dives but can't be saved.

DROPPED! Oh dear. Sree Charani at the receiving end this time. She draws Vishmi forward, the lofted drive over long off is heading straight to Smriti Mandhana. But the Indian vice captain palms it over the boundary for six. Vishmi gets a life.
0/16 for Vaishnavi Sharma on debut, who bowled with some lovely variation of speeds. Should have had a wicket, but for Sree Charani's dropped catch. Solid outing for the MP spinner.
And Sree Charani has something to celebrate. A quicker delivery and another SL batter falls playing the reverse sweep. She had given LBW when she tried this against a slow Deepti delivery but this quicker one beats her and hits the stumps. It was actually a seam-up delivery from Sree. Nice variation.

ANOTHER DROPPED CATCH! Harshitha is lucky, Arundhati is unlucky. The Indian bowler, back into the attack, induces a false shot from the left-hander. Sree Charani settles under in nice and early, but makes a complete mess of it at the end. It's been a really ordinary evening in the field for Charani at her home ground.
Last ball of that over, Jemimah nearly pulls off a stunner at backward point. Puts in a full length dive, gets two hands to it but couldn't hold on.
OUT.... No, review saves Harshitha. Deepti really loops one at 65kph and the batter was far too early into the reverse sweep and it looked plumb in real time. But Harshitha reviewed quickly and UltraEdge shows a small but decisive spike. Another lovely over from Deepto though.
Another tidy over from the debutant, Vaishnavi Sharma's third over goes for just three runs. Veda Krishnamurthy notes on air how she has varied her pace nicely, from the early 60kphs to early 80kphs.
Vishmi hasn't quite had the momentum in her innings, but nails a sweep through midwicket for a boundary off Sree Charani's over. Sri Lanka need a move on here. Charani was seen using the rag heavily on the ball, the dew is already making it tough for bowlers.
Amanjot into the attack with her medium pace, India's 6th bowling option. Another boundary for Harshitha, as she pulls a short ball well through square leg. Charani could have done better with her fielding though.
Amanjot nails a bouncer in that over and it smacks Harshitha on the grill. Concussion check. A quick hand of apology from Amanjot, but that was a terrific delivery, rose sharply.
Harshitha gets going with a four, nails a sweep between the two fielders in the deep. First runs conceded by Deepti after 8 dot balls. But another fine over by the Indian allrounder. Slowed one up superbly as Vishmi tried for a reverse sweep (did that take the glove? But Richa dropped it. YES REPLAYS SHOW THERE WAS A GLOVE. DROPPED!)
But the dropped catch doesn't cost India much. At the start of the very next over, Deepti strikes. This time Hasini goes for another reverse sweep but can only find Kranti at short third. Travelled quickly but Kranti holds on to a sharp chance.

DROPPED! Oh dear, just as we were about to praise India's fielding again, the first mishap. Two great efforts earlier in the over from Amanjot and Deepti in the deep but off the last ball, Sree Charani puts down a skier short fine.
Vaishnavi should have had her first wicket, but Sree Charani seemed to lose track of the trajectory in the night sky.
Sree Charani into the attack as Harman opts to employ two left-arm spinners from either end. A slightly expensive over from the local player though, Hasini puts away a reverse sweep for four. And then three taken off the last ball through point.
Nice first over in international cricket for Vaishnavi, no signs of nerves for the youngster. Accurate with her line and length. A couple of lofted sweeps in that over that fell short of fielders. Just three runs conceded.

What an over from Deepti. Slows things up superbly to beat Hasini's attempts to sweep. Then a quicker one at the end, that again makes it hard for Hasini to hit the sweep. There was one bad ball in that over, a flighted full toss that Hasini hit straight to the fielder.
But a MAIDEN OVER IN THE POWERPLAY. Welcome back Deepti Sharma.
Kranti being given a third straight over in the powerplay and the new batter Hasini helps herself to a boundary. Kranti stays around the wicket to the leftie, but angles one too much inward and it's easy pickings through fine leg. Earlier in the over, another lovely fielding effort to prevent a four, this one by Harmanpreet.

A closer look at that Chamari dismissal and it was a lovely execution of wobble seam from the Indian pacer. Kranti gets a warm round of applause at the boundary line.
After being hit for a couple of fours, Kranti Gaud changes the angle, comes around the wicket, and sneaks one through Chamari's defence. Superb response from the Indian pacer. A quick word from the leadership group after Chamari smashed a second four through the offside. And with the second ball with the new angle, she gets the breakthrough.

Arundhati Reddy starts off with a wide but bowls a tidy over otherwise. Getting some nice shape away from the lefti and into the rightie. Great fielding in that over from Deepti at short third to prevent a certain boundary as Chamari played a late cut.
Kranti starts and finishes the over with a couple of lovely away movers to the right-handed Vishmi. The last ball squares up the batter and gets the edge but doesn't carry to Deepti at slip. Meanwhile, the left-handed Chamari gets underway with a glance down the leg side for four.
Kranti Gaud has the new ball in hand. Chamari and Vishmi open the batting for the visitors.
And we are all set for action in Vizag after the national anthems.
India have three seamers, but Renuka Thakur misses out while Arundhati Reddy – who didn't get a game at the World Cup recently – gets a go.
SREE CHARANI BACK IN VIZAG:
A couple of massive balloons are flying high at the main entrance of the ACA-VDCA Stadium, where a statue of CK Nayudu: Colossus of Cricket, stands tall. Tournament banners stare from all corners. The quaint port city, the home of Vizzy, one of the most colourful characters of India cricket, is getting decked up to host two of India’s most defining matches of the Women’s World Cup–versus South Africa on Thursday and against Australia on Sunday. There is another reason the locals are excited. Andhra’s N Sree Charani could grace her home state association’s venue. The left-arm spinner grew up in a small village in the Kadapa district, 730 kilometres from Visakhapatnam, but a sense of regional pride buzzes. “We are so excited to see her play at this stadium,” former India men’s chief selector MSK Prasad, who has a gate named after him at the venue, tells The Indian Express. “Her quick escalation in the Indian team and the way she’s been performing for the Indian team, slowly becoming a part of the success story of this squad, is really giving us so much happiness, man,” he adds.
Former India cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy says there is dew already in the outfield.

Another Madhya Pradesh talent to keep an eye on, Vaishnavi Sharma grabbed the headlines at the start of India's victorious U19 World Cup campaign earlier this year, with 5/5 against Sri Lanka that included a hat-trick. She was the tournament's leading wicket-taker. She has since carried that onto the domestic circuit, finishing Senior Women's T20 Trophy at the top of wicket-taking charts with 21 from 9 innings at an economy rate of 4.50. She didn't find any buyer in the WPL auction but what a moment for her.
Oh wow, a new era indeed for Harmanpreet Kaur the captain! She actually wins a toss.
Jokes aside, no surprise that she opts to bowl first. Dew is going to play a role, she says.
Will India give a go to one of the two new faces in the squad? G Kamalini and Vaishnavi Sharma are the potential debutants. Perhaps at some point in this series for sure...
In an interview with Nasser Hussain for Sky Sports earlier this year, Jemimah Rodrigues spoke about the changes she has seen even in the limited time she has been involved in the sport. Hussain asked: “If we went back to Saint Joseph’s school, your old school in Mumbai, would they have more opportunities, fewer barriers now than you did?”
Rodrigues replied, “A 100%. I recently went there. I make it a point to go back to my school just to remember where I came from and all the teachers who helped me, and to see so many girls out there. When I went back, everyone is a cricket fan, everyone follows women’s cricket. So many people back at home in the same club that I used to practise, where I was the only girl playing amongst 500 boys, now there is a special net only for girls. They play at a very competitive level, they have their own team and you can see so much growth. And it’s got to do with how women’s cricket has developed… the WPL, Hundred, WBBL. Everyone’s watching it, and they want a chance to play.”
Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s first ICC Women’s World Cup-winning captain, began her journey playing with boys and has gone on record in the past saying she had little to no clue about women’s cricket apart from hearing the name Mithali Raj. The story goes that Shafali Verma, the player of the match in the final, had to cut her hair short so that she can replace her brother in a tournament where she’d go on to shine. Deepti Sharma, player of the tournament, got into cricket by following her brother around because she was intrigued. Pratika Rawal, who was on the dias with her teammates on a wheelchair after an unfortunate injury, was the first girl to enrol at Rohtak Road Gymkhana. Richa Ghosh, Renuka Singh Thakur and countless other cricketers in the country over the past couple of decades started their journeys playing alongside boys. On Sunday night, as the Indian women’s cricket team became World Champions for the first time, the generations of cricketers who pick up the bat now, will have 16 female role models to look up to.
Sometime past midnight, after she completed the catch that won India the ICC Women’s World Cup, Harmanpreet Kaur ran and jumped into her father’s arms. The 36-year-old Indian captain had seen a whole lot of ups and downs in her career but in those moments, she was just Harmendar Singh Bhullar’s little daughter who dreamt of one day becoming a world champion. When shown the footage of that epic night in Navi Mumbai, Bhullar says it was a fitting reward for pushing through nights that weren’t easy. “That day, the jump and hug was by a daughter to share the happiness and joy with her father. But we have seen those days too, when Harman would cry after facing the disappointment of losses at World Cups. At that time too, my wife and I stood like this for Harman so that she could share all her sadness and disappointment with us. And that’s the lesson for all the daughters as well as sons and parents. The joy in that hug that day also came after a lot of tears, but then we believed in Harman. She believed in herself and her team and we could see this day,” says Bhullar.
Sitting at Delhi’s Taj, Connaught Place, Smriti Mandhana was listening intently to the business pitch that was carefully constructed as extempore by the sports management professional. Tuhin Mishra, the suit, was gunning for the decade-long spirit of Jerry Maguire, complete with kwan coating the ka-ching, trying to sign up the elegant southpaw batter from Sangli, for his management agency. Smriti had just returned from the 2017 World Cup final where India had lost to England. But her star was clearly on the ascendance. Armed with a slim tie and smooth rattling of dizzy contract figures, Tuhin reckoned he had his Tom Cruise-act down pat.
“She heard me out without interrupting, and then told me, ‘You know, you remind me of Paresh Rawal’.” He laughed a tight laugh that didn’t reach his eyes. “It’s what any sports marketer would do!” he recalls with one right guffaw now. To be fair, it’s what Jerry Maguire would do.
ut that wickedly witty woman, who has broken several batting records this year, is a World Cup winner now, a key asset in the agency’s repertoire. With her multiple feats as India opener, as RCB captain, she will rank in the world’s Top 25 female sporting earners, boasting of close to 17 brands even before she nailed the big world title.
As she addressed the press for the first time since that famous night, Harmanpreet cheekily remarked there is no need to forget what happened on November 2nd in order to get ready for the next challenge. "T20 format is one the entire team loves the most. We need to remember the things which has given us the result to be part of this stage," she said. It is up for debate whether T20 is India's best format, because there is a case to be made that the players are better suited to the slightly longer versions of the game that demand more patience than flamboyance. Two ODI World Cup finals in 8 years compared to just one in the T20 WC's in recent years, is somewhat indicative of that. Harmanpreet and Co were well below par in the last edition of the tournament in UAE, playing somewhat timid cricket at the start of the tournament and failing to reach the semifinals. "We want to play a lot of T20 cricket. We have some new players in the team. It's the right time to give them a fair chance to understand how we have to go in the next World Cup," Harmanpreet said.

“I consider myself beyond lucky that, because of my sister, I could touch the World Cup trophy and click photos holding the Indian flag alongside Deepti. The most unforgettable moments of my life,” Sumit said.
“When I decided to quit my job, I didn’t know when Deepti would play for India, how many years she would play, or if she would ever play in the World Cup. I only knew one thing, that I had to do everything in my power so that she could play for India one day. After that, God took us beyond our dreams. Jab aap poori shiddhat se, poori mann se kisi kaam karte hain (When you do something with all your heart and mind), destiny will be with you.”
“I started playing cricket because of my brother. He made a lot of sacrifices for me; he left his job so that I could pursue my dream. On such a stage, in front of family, to perform well and lift the trophy feels truly special,” Deepti told ICC
Before boarding the train from Agra to Mumbai, Deepti Sharma’s brother, Sumit Sharma, had a word with the India all-rounder. The heartbreaks of the past came up, of course, but Deepti made a promise… come what may, she’ll not let the World Cup trophy out of India’s grasp.
“Before the final, she made a commitment to me. ‘Bhaiya, we have already reached the finals twice. Especially in 2017, we were just 9 runs away from winning the World Cup. Whatever I do, I will put in my 100% effort, and I will not let this trophy go from India, kuch bhi ho jaye.’ Even before the final, she told me the same thing… with the bat or ball or on the field, whatever I can. And as we met on the field, she said: ‘Bhaiya, mein apne promise poora kiya na?’ She did what she promised,” Sumit told The Indian Express. (Read more from Vinayakk Mohanarangan)
