US condemns Denmark shooting, calls it ‘deplorable’

The United States is condemning a deadly shooting at a free-speech event in Copenhagen, calling it “deplorable.”

National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan says US officials are ready to help with the investigation and have been in touch with their Danish counterparts.

She offered condolences to the loved ones of the lone man who was killed Saturday in what police are calling a terror attack. The shooting took place at a free-speech event that featured an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.

The shooting came a month after extremists killed a dozen people at a satirical newspaper in Paris that had sparked Muslim outrage with its depictions of Muhammad.
