10 dead, including suspect, in shooting at a school in Austria’s Graz

Graz school shooting: Ten people, including suspect, were killed in a shooting at a secondary school in the Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday, news agency Reuters reported.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker called the shooting, a “national tragedy” and offered his condolences to the families who have lost their children.

“The rampage at a school in Graz is a national tragedy that has deeply shaken our entire country. There are no words for the pain and grief that we all – all of Austria – are feeling right now,” Stocker said.

According to a report by BBC, students and teachers are believed to be among the casualties at the Dreierschützengasse high school.

Details on injuries still remain unclear. Earlier, country’s Interior Ministry said there are “several fatalities”, but did not specify the number.

The 21-year old suspect of the shooting was a former student at the school but did not graduate, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said in a new conference, news agency Reuters reported.

The Kurier newspaper, citing police sources, reported that the perpetrator was a former student at the school.

Special forces were deployed at the school after a call at 10 am local time, when the gunman opened fire in two classrooms. The area around the school was cordoned off, public transport diverted, and armed officers guarded surrounding streets.

The Graz police, ninety minutes later, said that it secured the site of the incident and there is no further danger.

Describing the incident as a “terrible tragedy,” the city’s mayor, Elke Kahr, said, adding, “ the attack concern us all … Time will be needed to process this.”

Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig expressed his condolences on the attack. “We must stand together as a society. Hate and violence must never gain the upper hand. Our response to this must be an even stronger commitment to solidarity and respect,” he posted on social media.

Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger also expressed her “sympathy and sadness are with the victims and their families,” calling the news “incomprehensible and unbearable.” She added, “No one can imagine the suffering.”

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Chancellor Christian Stocker were en route to Graz.

Graz, Austria’s second-biggest city, is located in the southeast of the country and has about 300,000 inhabitants.
