The number was further reduced to 19 as three MLAs defected to YSRCP after the 2019 election.

The exact date for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections in 2024 has not yet been officially announced by the Election Commission of India. However, it is scheduled to be held before May 2024. 

Based on past election cycles and recent statements from Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, April 2024 is considered the most likely timeframe.

Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections 2024: The present scenario 

These elections will see the contest for 175 assembly constituencies as parties and candidates vie for the mandate of the people. The current tenure of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, led by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) under Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, is set to conclude in April 2024, making this election crucial for the ruling party as well as the opposition. 

Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections 2019: A recap

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly Elections in 2019 were held on April 11, 2019, alongside the Lok Sabha elections. The election was the first in Andhra Pradesh since the state’s bifurcation in 2014, forming Telangana. The main parties were the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), and the Janasena Party. The YSRCP, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, won 151 out of 175 assembly seats, while the TDP secured 23 seats. The Janasena Party won one seat, however, the BJP and INC did not win any seats. As a result, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

TDP-Janasena announce candidates for Assembly polls

TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and Janasena chief Pawan Kalyan on Saturday (February 24) announced their first joint list of 118 candidates for the forthcoming Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh. The two leaders, however, said the seat allocation had been done keeping in mind the need to accommodate the BJP in case the saffron party decides to join the alliance.

TDP candidates will be contesting from 94 constituencies while Janasena will contest from 24 seats, as per the first list. “This union is for the future of the state. This is the first step for a great effort,” said Naidu, addressing a press conference at his Andhra Pradesh residence in Undavalli on the TDP-Janasena alliance.

Seat sharing arrangement for the remaining 57 of the 175 Assembly constituencies are expected to be announced soon. As part of the alliance, Janasena will contest three Lok Sabha seats of the total of 25 from the state. TDP sources said currently discussions were underway with the BJP for a possible pre-poll alliance.
