The election is expected to be a triangular contest between Pakistan Muslims League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of imprisoned Imran Khan.
More than 128 million people in Pakistan are registered to vote in the upcoming general elections. Nearly 18,000 candidates are running for 336 seats in the National Assembly and 749 seats in Provincial Assemblies. The seats will be filled using two methods: first-past-the-post for single-member constituencies and proportional representation for reserved seats for women and non-Muslims. These elections are crucial for Pakistan, as the country deals with major economic, security, and environmental issues that its leaders will need to tackle.
Section 98 of the Elections Act requires the Election Commission of Pakistan to publish official results within 14 days of the election. Since the voting will take place on February 8, this means official results should be announced by Thursday, February 22.
