The first phase of Karnataka government’s ambitious KHIR (Knowledge-Health-Innovation-Research) City project, which also found a mention in the 2024-25 Budget released in February this year, is set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday (September 26).
“A year ago, we envisioned a city that would become a self-sustaining ecosystem, integrating knowledge, health, innovation, and research. We brainstormed with industry leaders and entrepreneurs to gather valuable insights. Now, we are ready to bring this vision to life! The much-awaited #KHIRCity will be launched on Sep 26, 2024, by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah,” Minister for Large and Medium Industries M B Patil said in a post on X announcing the launch on Sunday.
The new ‘Knowledge, Health Care, Innovation and Research City’ will be spread across 2,000 acres near Bengaluru city. Phase 1 will cover about 500 acres.
The first phase will be launched by the CM at the Vidhana Soudha building in Bengaluru on Thursday (September 26).
The KHIR City will be located between Doddaballapura and Dobaspet, about 50 km from the Kempegowda International Airport. “The city will be designed to accommodate a residential density of 100 people per acre,” Patil said.
An investment of Rs 40,000 crore is expected to create around one lakh jobs, including both direct and indirect employment, Patil’s post said.
The project idea, first introduced over a year ago, is aimed at putting Bengaluru on the “world map of innovation and research for the next 25 years”.
The minister noted that the KHIR City project is inspired by models such as Singapore’s Biopolis, Research Triangle Park, Science Park, KBIC, and the Boston Innovation Cluster. “The innovation city will be home to world-class universities, hospitals, innovative industries and research institutions,” he said.
Priority is expected to be given to sectors like future transportation systems, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defense, and space technology.
To ensure the timely implementation of the project, Patil said that the government had formed an advisory committee comprising renowned subject matter experts including the likes of Dr Devi Shetty, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Prashanth Prakash, Thomas Osha, Ranjith Kumar, Ron Kimball, Nikhil Kamath and Mohandas Pai.
