The last stage of the UPSC CSE Cycle, i.e. the personality test, also known as the interview stage, has commenced. It is conducted by the various boards constituted by UPSC at the Union Public Service Commission office housed at Dholpur House in Delhi. It carries 275 marks. This year the UPSC interviews begin on December 8, 2025. Whether you are appearing this year or not, there are certain basics you must always know.

Here are the 10 must-know interview points for every aspirants

#1 Understand the Purpose of the Interview

The most important point is to know that the interview tests your personality, leadership, empathy, decision-making, and ability to fit into the governance system. Hence, the focus should be on qualities like honesty, public service, team spirit, willingness to assume responsibility, and presence of mind. Do you know what differentiates the interview from the Prelims and Mains? It’s not just about knowledge or knowing all the answers.

#2 Answering “Why Civil Services?”

Of course you must avoid talking about power, authority, or job security. Rather emphasize public service, contributing to society, leadership, diversity, and being a change agent. Show your “inner calling” for civil services. Do you know why this question is often asked of candidates? To see who the real ‘you’ is and whether you are suited for the service.

#3 Master Your DAF (Detailed Application Form)

Candidates must be meticulous while filling it. Questions in the first few minutes are mostly based on DAF entries (achievements, hobbies, leadership roles). One must ensure great consistency between DAF entries and your verbal answers. Do you know why? Because your personality is reflected in that sheet of paper, and the words you utter are a testimony.

#4 Interview Etiquette and Conduct

Well-groomed appearance, clean attire, polished shoes, decent posture, and good eye contact are essentials for any interview. Candidates need to speak clearly, avoid robotic or over-dramatic gestures, maintain a polite and humble demeanor. Remember, honesty is crucial; if unsure, admit it rather than guessing. Do you know what you must not forget while facing the interview? You are not the smartest person in the room, so stay true to yourself.

#5 Hobbies and Interests Matter

DAF is the key here too. Your hobbies show involvement, perseverance, and genuine interest. Do highlight them in your answers only if necessary. Avoid mentioning recent or casual activities; focus on sustained engagement. Moreover, honest and thoughtful discussion about hobbies scores positively. But where can you falter? By stretching it too far or showing them your worst talent.

#6 Current Affairs Awareness

It is obvious that UPSC tests your awareness of domestic and international events. Prepare from reliable sources like credible newspapers. You must know that understanding contemporary issues helps in opinion-based and analytical questions. But do you know what can be fatal to your opinion? Contradictions and controversies.

#7 Communication and Language Proficiency

Candidates are expected to be clear, concise, and rational in their answer. No one expects or desires from you to use fancy words. Language proficiency in UPSC interview means using words which can easily convey your ideas. This is a UPSC interview, not an English proficiency examination. So, while answering, prioritise your key points and maintain moderate tone with pace. Do you know why this is important? Because effective communication reflects structured thinking and personality.

#8 Answering Questions Effectively

Candidates must avoid over-explaining or including unnecessary keywords that can open counter-questions. One can take a pause for 3–4 seconds to organize thoughts before answering. You can, in fact, request for some time from the panel to recall, maintain flow. Try avoiding filler words like “umm” or long, disorganized breaks. They show that you lack confidence. You know what else to avoid? Over confidence.

#9 Mental Preparation & Confidence

Aspirants must not get influenced by social media images, reputations of panel members or mock interviews you saw on YouTube. Rather, focus should be on the question. One must stay calm under pressure, and handle unexpected elements gracefully. Stay attentive and don’t let anything divert your attention. You know what keeps going through your mind, which is the most distracting? Your clothes, their clothes, and those biscuits on the table.

# 10 Final Dos and Don’ts :

There are some basics which every aspirant must remember.

Dos: Be truthful, humble, well-behaved, confident, rational, and empathetic.

Don’ts: Avoid arguing, extreme opinions without rationale, being stressed or overconfident, or giving misleading information.

You know what the most important thing in any interview, and in life in general, is? Faith in yourself.
