There is nothing surprising about the popularity of fast-food restaurants in urban India, and a nutritionist’s post on X (formerly Twitter), that most people are ordering fast food at McDonald’s outlets, has invited a lot of criticism.

Pramila Mundra, who describes herself as a certified nutritionist and health coach on the microblogging website, said she was standing in a queue at McDonald’s to buy a bottle of water. She posted a photo of a food tray showing burgers, French fries and Coke and ice cream and said it was what she saw most people ordering at a McDonald’s outlet. As “people have moved far away from real foods”, overweight, obesity and metabolic diseases were on the rise, she wrote.

The post, however, did not go down well with netizens, who questioned the appropriateness of the nutritionist’s expectations given that she was at a fast-food restaurant.

“You were trying to buy a bottle of water in McDonald’s while guilt tripping people who are ordering McDonald’s food at McDonald’s? Why this Kolaveri D? Although I truly believe in healthy living, still this attitude of nutritionists towards guilt tripping people needs to end,” an X user commented.

“Why are you waiting for a bottle of water at MacDonald’s?” asked another. “You were waiting for a bottle of water in a queue at McDonald’s and you’re surprised that people are ordering McDonald’s food at McDonald’s? Just trying to understand,” another user wrote. “I think so you are not quite aware the concept of FAST FOOD,” another netizen said. “You are at McDonald’s. Go to the gym and you will find people exercising,” another user wrote.
