One of the most celebrated Indian war films of all time, director JP Dutta’s Border (1997) continues to rank as a landmark work in the careers of all those associated with it. Boasting a star-studded cast led by Sunny Deol, Border became an all-time blockbuster and also bagged several trophies at the 45th National Film Awards and the 1997 SCREEN Awards. Now, the movie’s legacy is set to take a new shape as its sequel, Border 2, gears up for release. Helmed by Anurag Singh, the movie features Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Diljit Dosanjh in key roles. Border 2 will hit the screens on January 23, coinciding with the Republic Day weekend.

Now, actor Varun Dhawan has shared intriguing details about the epic war film. Revealing that Border 2, much like its predecessor, is set against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan war of 1971, the actor mentioned that certain actual events have also served as inspiration for the movie. “Border 2 is a film based on the 1971 war and some true events around that,” he noted during an ‘Ask Me Anything’ (AMA) session on X (formerly Twitter). He was responding to a Pakistan-based netizen’s question about whether the movie would be released in his country. “Aapki film Border 2 kab release hogi. Main Tara Singh ka fan hu, unhei mera salaam bolna,” was the message.

Although Varun did not address the release aspect, he mentioned that he is certain Sunny Deol has enough fans in the neighbouring country as well. “I’m sure Sunny sir ke Pakistan mein bhi fans hain (I’m sure Sunny sir has fans in Pakistan as well),” he replied to the fan who introduced himself as a big fan of Tara Singh, Sunny’s character in the Gadar movies. When asked what prompted him to take up Border 2, he told another fan, “A war can never be won by an individual; it takes all forces to come together. In Border 2, we have the Army, Navy, and Air Force together. Also, the one man army, Sunny Deol.”

He also expressed his excitement at having received the opportunity to work with Sunny and Diljit. Replying to a Twitterati’s question regarding the biggest lesson he learned from Sunny, Varun noted, “Ignore the noise and connect with the audience.” When a fan pointed out, “Physique-wise, you look the same. But the moustache is new,” regarding his look in Border 2, Varun quipped, “Nahi nahi (No no), I have grown an extra hand also. Please, properly dekhna (look properly).”

Varun Dhawan names Janhvi Kapoor, Kriti Sanon as co-stars turned close friends

The AMA session had another light-hearted moment when a netizen asked, “Bro, will you also return as Bhediya in Avengers: Doomsday?” Varun replied jokingly, “You never know.” The actor also offered an important life lesson during the interactions. Criticising those who find happiness in others’ failures, he noted, “All one can do is keep their head down and work. Never laugh at someone’s failure.” He also pointed out that “time changes everything” is the biggest lesson he learned from his failures.

When asked which of his co-stars he is closest to in life, Varun named Janhvi Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. “I’m pretty close to Janhvi. Kriti is also a good friend. Oh, had a great time working with Ahaan (Shetty) and Diljit recently (in Border 2),” he wrote. While Varun and Janhvi worked together in movies such as Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari and Bawaal, he shared the screen with Kriti in Bhediya. He also named CM Punk and John Cena as his favourite WWE superstars after The Rock. Varun further mentioned that he hasn’t signed any new films as of now.
