(Freepik)Shardiya Navratri Day 2, Maa Brahmacharini: The nine-day Shardiya, or Shrad Navratri, is an important Hindu festival observed across India, which is observed in the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin during Sharad Ritu, that is, September to October, as per the Gregorian calendar.
Out of the four Navratris—Magha (winter), Chaitra (spring), Ashadha (monsoon), and Shardiya (autumn), this Navratri is regarded as the most significant, which is why it is also known as the Maha Navratri.
This festival is devoted to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, with the festival having already commenced on October 3, 2024, and is set to conclude on October 12, with Dusshera falling on the same day.
Today marks the second day of Navratri 2024, dedicated to the worship of Maa Brahmacharini.
As per Drik Panchang, the Dwitiya tithi of today, day 2 of Navratri, which falls from Friday, October 4, will last until 5:30 am on October 5.
According to Hindu mythology and Drik Panchang, Goddess Parvati, born after the Kushmanda form, underwent severe penance to marry Lord Shiva.
She ate flowers, fruits, leafy vegetables, and Bilva leaves for 1,000 years, praying to Lord Shankar. After 3,000 years, she stopped eating leaves and survived without food and water.
Maa Brahmacharini is the second form of Goddess Durga, known for her calm demeanour and serene demeanour, reflecting her dedication to spiritual practice.
She is often depicted as a young woman, devoted and focused, symbolising purity and spiritual wisdom, and is worshipped in her unmarried form.
Her name comes from Sanskrit words for supreme consciousness and self-discipline, meaning “one who practices or pursues,” and hence is revered for her devotion, peace, and perseverance.
Each day of Navratri is dedicated to the adoration of one of the Navdurga, and the nine-day celebration is also coloured differently.
The auspicious colour for today is green. It represents nature and generates feelings of growth, fertility, tranquillity, and serenity.
Drik Panchang’s Dwitiya tithi of Day 2 of Navratri, which falls on October 4, lasts until October 5.
Devotees rise early and take a bath to purify themselves, then sprinkle Gangajal in their worship place and worship Maa Durga as a family.
In a metal pot, offer jasmine flowers, rice, and sandalwood to Maa Brahmacharini.
After bathing and adorning the goddess, present her with jasmine flowers, roli, and kumkum.
The deity is honoured with an abhishek using milk, curd, and honey, and a special bag of sugar is prepared as an offering.
