IndiGo has been hit by major flight disruptions over the past few days, mainly due to crew shortages following the rollout of new crew duty and rest norms. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a probe into the extensive operational breakdowns, which resulted in at least 38 flight cancellations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday.

Amid the issue, a flood of videos capturing chaos at airports nationwide has been drawing widespread attention on social media.

One of the videos shows several passengers left stranded at Hyderabad airport. Many travellers reached out to the front desk to inquire with IndiGo’s ground staff. “The unexpected disruption created severe confusion and frustration at the airport triggered a chaos. Hundreds of passengers, including Ayyappa Devotees had been waiting at the terminal with no clarity on flight rescheduling,” journalist Surya Reddy wrote on X.

Watch here:

“The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is currently investigating the situation and evaluating measures along with the airline, to reduce cancellations and delays, in order to minimise inconvenience being caused to passengers… Indigo has been asked to report to DGCA, Headquarters, to present the facts leading to the current situation along with plans to mitigate the ongoing delays & cancellations,” the DGCA said in a statement.

The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) said the disruption stems directly from IndiGo’s “prolonged and unconventional lean manpower strategy across departments, especially in flight operations”. It also alleged rising concerns that flight delays and cancellations might be used to “pressure regulators” when rules are not in the airline’s favour.
