‘I am an Indian…I don’t hate Pakistan’ campaign shines a beacon of hope amid strained relations

People across India and Pakistan are showing their support for a harmonious living in this digital campaign started by Mumbai-based Ram Subramanian.

Amid the furore over performances by Pakistani artistes in India and book launches being interrupted, people are taking to social media to make sure voices of harmony are also heard.

Troubled by the hate politics plaguing the country, Mumbai-based Ram Subramanian changed profile picture on his social networking websites with a picture of himself holding out a post-it with the words: “I am an Indian. I am from Mumbai. I don’t hate Pakistan. I am not alone. There are many people like me”. He urged others — who agreed with his campaign — to do the same as well.

This small change has now become a viral phenomenon, with people across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram showing their support for the campaign by posting similar photos. Over the weekend, more than 15,000 people had changed their profile picture, says a BBC report. The heart-warming response came from Kashmir to Kerala in India and from Lahore to Karachi in Pakistan.

“If this is the majority then who it is who wants to fight is my question,” says Subramanian.
