A man took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a video of a young child behind the wheel of a Mahindra Thar on a busy stretch in Bengaluru. The child was purportedly steering the vehicle while sitting on the lap of a man.

Sagay Raj P, a journalist, posted the video on Monday, tagging the Bengaluru City Police and the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic). He highlighted the grave traffic violation witnessed near MG Road Metro station and also shared the vehicle number.

“Dear sir Witnessed a clear violation near MG Road Metro station – a child behind the wheel driving a car. @BlrCityPolice @Jointcptraffic,” he wrote.

The video drew sharp reactions on social media even as some defended the man’s action.
“He was not behind the wheel but on this father’s (assumption) lap holding on to the steering wheel…One who has kids will relate to what is happening there,” a user commented.

“This is what George Orwell was talking about in ‘1984’,” said another. “I see so many children at the wheel on blr mysore express way. Parents look so proud. Accidents happen, people die, then they blame Govts & police for it,” wrote a third. “Need a criminal sectional for this type violation. And parents require consulting to good doctor,” another user posted.

In August last year, a car owner was fined by the Bengaluru police after a video went viral in which he was seen reversing his car after entering the opposite lane to jump a queue of vehicles stuck in a traffic jam. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno bore a Haryana registration number.

The Whitefield Traffic police station had also shared a photo of the driver, blurring his face. “Vehicle traced. Needful necessary action for the violation taken, fine amount paid by the car owner,” they had said.
