Having a meetha paan as a mouth freshener is a common practice in many North Indian households. However, in recent years, traditional preparations like meetha paan, which is made by filling betel leaves with a sweet mix of chopped dates, tutti-frutti, gulkand and fennel seeds, have undergone many experiments.
Recently a video of an avocado paan is creating a buzz on the foodie side of Instagram. As its name suggests, the avocado paan is made by adding bits of avocado into the meetha paan mix.
Content creator Anita Lalwani Surana, who runs Yamu’s Panchayat, a paan-focused outlet in India, shared a video of avocado paan from their Connaught Place location. This video has over two lakh likes. However, in the comments, many people have expressed negative opinions about mixing an exotic fruit into a paan.
Commenting on the video, an Instagram user wrote, “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”. People also noted that the bland flavour of avocado will rarely add anything into the paan mix. Echoing this view, an Instagram user wrote, “That avocado ain’t fully ripe it’s tastes really bitter 🤮🤮”. Another person wrote, “Fun fact is the taste didn’t even change with 1%”.
The avocado paan is not the only experimentation with paan that has received negative response online. In April, a food blogging page from Pakistan on Instagram called Mera Apna Punjab (@mera_apna_punjab_official) posted a video of a street vendor preparing a burger paan. Similarly in November 2021, an eatery in Gujarat decided to pair paan with brownie.
