What started as a routine training day for climbers on Peru’s Vallunaraju mountain quickly turned into a heart-stopping moment when a massive glacier unexpectedly cracked apart just behind them.

Javier Rivadeneira, who captured the event on video, shared his experience with a mix of awe and fear. “I felt the real fear when it began to split,” he wrote in the caption. In the footage, you can see climbers scaling the mountain when, without warning, a large section of the glacier begins to break away, sending a wave of tension through the group. Despite the danger, the climbers kept their cool, successfully handling the terrifying situation without panic.

Rivadeneira described the scene further. “Today at the International Rescue Course in Vallunaraju at #arribaperú we got to face and solve a real situation of the breaking of a large serac mass,” he said in his post.

He continued, “I truly felt fear when it started to crack, and I was the ‘backup’ for my friends from Colombia and my partner, who was able to execute the rescue maneuver very well and recover our climbing partner.” Reflecting on the intense moment, he added, “While I was freeing myself from the rope, I thought of my friends who were pulling another system of pulleys or recovering our Swiss friend and Mexican friend…”

According to Fox Weather, the glacier split into three massive chunks before sinking into the icy waters at an altitude of 17,000 feet. Rivadeneira expressed gratitude for the experience, emphasising the importance of their training. “The wave coming back was strong, and I’m grateful for the years of experience and what we’ve learned in the course these days. We were able to speak the same language and work as a team. Proud of all my teammates and our mentor, together with my friend from Ecuador, who helped so much.”

The video quickly went viral, leaving viewers stunned and terrified. One user commented, “How is bro so calm in this situation.” Another added, “That’s about as close to that as anyone ever wants to get.” A third expressed concern over the melting glaciers: “So sad to see the ice melting, our glaciers disappearing!” A fourth joked, “The cameraman never dies.”
