Karur Stampede Case Latest News: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday issued a notice to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay, asking him to appear for questioning in the Karur stampede case, the PTI reported quoting an official.
The CBI has questioned several office bearers of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in connection with the case, they said.
The agency has now decided to call Vijay in connection with the case, following which it may take a call on filing a charge sheet in the matter, they said.
The CBI took over the case from an SIT following a Supreme Court order, and the investigating agency has been gathering evidence relating to the stampede that occurred during a political meeting addressed by Vijay on September 27 in Karur, Tamil Nadu.
On September 27, 2025, 41 people, including 18 women and 10 children, died during a stampede at a TVK rally in Karur. The victims were from Karur, Erode, Dindigul, Tiruppur, and Salem districts. The crowd had gathered at Velusamypuram, along the Karur–Erode Highway, for what was called a “people’s rally,” when chaos erupted near the exit after Vijay’s address.
Earlier, a Supreme Court bench of Justices J K Maheswari and N V Anjaria had set up a three-member supervisory committee headed by retired judge, Justice Ajay Rastogi, to monitor the probe into the stampede. The bench had said the issue “has a bearing on the fundamental rights of citizens and the incident has shaken national conscience”, the court said, adding that it “requires fair and impartial investigation”.
