An Indian YouTuber living in Canada has triggered online debate after sharing a video from Toronto that highlights the struggles of the city’s homeless population. The clip, uploaded on Instagram by Nitish Advitiy, shows a man crouched under a public fountain, scrubbing his clothes before splashing water on his face. Filming the moment, Advitiy can be heard saying in Hindi: “Yeh dekho bhai, kapde dho raha hai yeh kaise fountain ke neeche. Toronto ka scene hai yeh.” (Look, he is washing his clothes under this fountain. This is the reality of Toronto.)
He also said that the man had brought all his belongings with him: “Aisa scene maine imagine nahi kiya tha ki idhar kuch aisa dekhne ko milega. Yeh homeless hai bhai, yeh halat hai homeless ki idhar, Toronto ke andar.” (I never imagined I’d witness something like this here. He is homeless, and this is the condition of the homeless in Toronto.)
The on-screen text read, “Poverty in Canada: Toronto’s homeless people,” while the caption stated: “This is how the poor in Canada wash their clothes.”
Since being posted, the video has crossed over 100,000 views and stirred a mix of reactions. One commenter wrote, “Urge all the people to record and bring such incidents forward. Why should our community be targeted always.” Another pointed out, “Aur ye log Bharat ko gareeb bolte hain.” (And these people call India poor.) One user wrote, “These Indians never understand basic civic sense. Oh wait, he is not an Indian!”
At the same time, a section of users criticised Advitiy for filming and posting the clip. One person commented, “Indian mindset, first come to Canada then highlight all the bad things in Canada like they are coming from such a pristine and high functioning country.”
This video follows another viral incident that stirred debate recently –– a clip of a couple in Canada caught dumping garbage on the roadside. In that footage, the woman, dressed in a traditional salwar-kameez, and a man in shirt and jeans can be seen unloading multiple plastic bags from their car and discarding them one by one. After tossing the trash, the man even empties the bags and takes them back, leaving the garbage scattered behind.
