WhatsApp testing message threads feature: Here’s what it means

WhatsApp has been testing a new feature that will allow users to manage their chats as threads.

The popular instant messaging app WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature that will combine responses to a specific message into a thread. This way, keeping track of chats will be hassle-free for users. The feature will likely create a dedicated view showing all the quoted messages connecting back to the original message that started the thread.

The new feature, which seems to have been in the works, was spotted on WABetaInfo, a site dedicated to real-time updates about WhatsApp. The new feature is under development, and it seems it won’t be available for testing until a future update. According to the website, the message threads are expected to be available for individual conversations, communities, channels, and group chats. However, the ability to reply to messages in channels is currently under development.

“This feature enables users to actively engage in discussions by responding to messages shared by community administrators, making it easier to share feedback, ask questions, and contribute to ongoing conversations within the community,” read the post on WABetaInfo. Based on the report, WhatsApp seems to be developing additional tools to enhance message management, organisation, and interaction in regular and group conversations.

How will it help users?

Reportedly, once a user replies to a quoted message, the thread will stay connected to the original message. This way, all responses will stay organised. Similarly, in group chats where discussions can become cumbersome, threads will save users from scrolling through the entire history to find specific messages. This is because the feature will allow them to easily navigate through threads and focus on relevant conversations. This will also lessen confusion in groups that are busy, where multiple people may be replying to the same message.

As of now, there is no confirmation when the message threads feature will be generally available for all WhatsApp users. Regardless, this is a welcome change for anyone who uses WhatsApp to organise and make plans with large groups.
