With generative AI taking centre stage in the world of software following the launch of ChatGPT, it’s no surprise that some of the most downloaded apps on your phone are finding new and innovative ways to leverage the technology. Most recently, LinkedIn announced that it is testing the ability to create entire posts using generative AI to help save users time and express themselves better.

But LinkedIn is only one example. Below, we take a look at how generative AI is transforming some of the most popular apps across different categories on your phone.

Google Workspace apps

Google unveiled a new feature called ‘Help me write’ in March, which allows users to generate emails and other content by typing just a few words. Once generated, users can use the Recreate or Refine options to make the text appear formal, add more context, or summarise the output. The feature was initially limited to a small group of testers, but it was expanded to a much larger pool of users last month. ‘Help me write’ is part of the Labs in Google Workspace program and only works in US English.

Snapchat

Snapchat is currently overflowing with generative AI-powered features. In February, the platform launched a new chatbot called My AI that helps users with a variety of information and tasks. The platform is also employing generative AI in Lenses and announced a “new generation” of filters powered by the technology in April. The company says this allows Lenses to work with augmented reality (AR) faster and look more realistic than ever before.

Microsoft SwiftKey and Bing

Microsoft has brought its AI-powered chatbot, Bing Chat, to its SwiftKey keyboard app for Android and iOS. Users can access Bing Chat by tapping a button on the keyboard and chat with the bot, ask it to rewrite text, or search the web for answers. Bing Chat is also available in other Microsoft apps on Android and iOS like Edge, Bing, and Skype.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is on a roll with generative AI features and has added them across its platform to enhance user productivity and engagement. Some of the features include AI-powered posts, copy suggestions for ads, writing assistants for profiles, and job descriptions for hiring. These features leverage advanced models from OpenAI and Hugging Face. LinkedIn also offers courses on generative AI on its learning platform.

Google Messages

At the I/O developer conference in May, Google unveiled a slew of generative AI features. One of these was Magic Compose in its Messages app. The tool can be accessed via an icon next to the text field on the app, tapping which lets users rewrite the text using various preset styles, like “chill,” “excited,” or “Shakespeare.” The feature is currently in beta, though, and is yet to be rolled out to all users.

Spotify

Spotify has launched a new feature that lets users create their own personalised playlists with the help of artificial intelligence. Called AI DJ, the feature uses machine learning to analyse their music taste, mood, and preferences and then generates a custom mix of songs that match their style. Users can also tweak the parameters of the mix, such as tempo, genre, and energy level, to fine-tune their experience.

TikTok

TikTok is reportedly experimenting with a new tool that lets users create avatars. The feature, powered by generative AI, works similarly to the internet sensation Lensa, generating artistic avatars based on three to ten photos of theirs. The tool isn’t broadly available as of yet and is being tested in select markets. You can only use it once a day and each time you use it, it can generate up to 30 avatars.
