Next Mumbai mayor will be Hindu and Marathi: CM Fadnavis

Expressing confidence over the victory of the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said the next Mumbai mayor will be a Hindu and Marathi.
The elections for 29 municipal corporations including BMC will take place on January 15 and results on January 16.
During an interactive session with a news channel, Fadnavis said, “ The Mumbai mayor will be from the Mahayuti. The Mumbai mayor will be a Hindu and Marathi person.”
The emphasis on terms “Hindu” and “Marathi” assumes great significance given the political dynamics that have evolved in the civic body elections, with the reunion of estranged Thackeray cousins – Uddhav and Raj, followed by attempts by Opposition parties to consolidate Muslim vote banks against BJP.
To effectively counter Congress/Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and Shiv Sena/MNS/NCP alliances in BMC, BJP has adopted the strategy to aggressively push Hindutva agenda. Also using the development agenda it aims to cut through the Marathi vote bank which is Thackeray’s mainstay.

The remark invited sharp reactions from Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
Commenting on the controversial remark of BJP leader Kripa Shankar Singh alleging the next mayor would be from the North Indian community, Fadnavis said, “ Singh’s remark was not in the context of Mumbai.” Moreover, he pointed out, “ Singh was not the party’s spokesperson.”
