Jasprit Bumrah completed his 15th Test five-wicket haul and, in the process, got his name on the Lord’s Honours Board for the first time in his career. His 5/74 in 27 overs included five maidens and helped India dismiss England for 387 in the first innings of the third Test on Friday. Bumrah had taken three wickets in a devastating early spell on Day 2 before adding one more to his tally in the second session and completing the fifer. Bumrah had dismissed Harry Brook in the final session of Day 1.

Bumrah has thus taken a five-wicket haul for the second consecutive time in this series, having done so in the first innings of the first Test as well. He then sat out the second Test, in which Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj stepped up in his absence and helped India secure a series-levelling win.

England started the day on a score of 251/4, with Joe Root batting on 99. He quickly got that single he needed to notch up his 37th Test century but Bumrah then ran through the hosts like hot knife through butter. He toppled Root (104), Ben Stokes (44) and Chris Woakes (0) in a stunning seven-ball burst reducing England from 251/4 to 271/7.

In-form wicketkeeper Jamie Smith then scored a quick 51 in an 85-run eighth wicket stand with Brydon Carse, who also went on to score a Test half-century and accumulated 56 runs. Smith eventually edged Mohammed Siraj behind soon after the break, while Bumrah cleaned up Jofra Archer to complete his second fifer in as many Tests.

Kapil Dev’s record broken

Apart from this being the 15th five-wicket haul of his career, this is the 13th time Bumrah has got one in a Test played away from home. He thus broke the record for most five-fors by an Indian in overseas Tests. It was previously held by Kapil Dev, who had 12 in 66 Tests, Bumrah has 13 in 35.

Bumrah had Root, Brook, Stokes and Archer all clean bowled. This is the second time he has managed to do so, with the previous time being in the Caribbean at North Sound in 2019. Bumrah had picked five wickets for seven runs in that spell. Mohammed Shami is the only other Indian pacer to have done it even once.
