Riding statehood sentiments, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) stormed to power and is all set to form the first Telangana government which officially comes into existence on June 2. The TRS won 63 of the 119 Assembly and 11 of the 17 Lok Sabha seats. The TDP — dubbed as an “Andhrawala party” — won 15 Assembly seats and bagged the prestigious Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency, a suburb of Hyderabad.
The 15 Assembly seats that TDP won in Telangana are in and around Hyderabad where a large number of Seemandhra people reside, and YSRCP was supposed to win in these seats.
The Congress won 21 Assembly and two Lok Sabha seats while the BJP won five Assembly and the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat.
The TRS owes its victory to K Chandrasekhara Rao, who was quick to wrest the initiative as soon as Telangana Bill was passed on February 18. He launched a high-pitched campaign leaving the Congress way behind. Reports that Telangana voted differently — for TRS in Assembly and for Congress in Lok Sabha — were also proved wrong. “I thank the people of Telangana for such a big mandate. I assure Telangana people again that TRS will fulfill every promise it has made in its manifesto,” KCR said.
The “pink” wave (TRS party colour) swept aside all opposition with several Congress stalwarts biting the dust. KCR won from Medak Lok Sabha as well as Gajwal Assembly — it would be decided Saturday at the TRS legislative party and parliamentary party meeting which seat he will vacate.
KCR’s son K T Rama Rao won from Sircilla in Karimnagar district while daughter K Kavita won from Nizamabad Lok Sabha seat defeating Congress MP Madhu Yakshi Goud.
The Congress tied-up with CPI but the Left party did not win any seat. BJP’s Bandaru Dattatreya won from Secunderabad while MIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi won from Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat.
