• One may argue that extraditing David Headley will not serve any purpose as our investigating agencies are not as thorough or efficient as their US counterparts. Still,it is India’s right to interrogate him for masterminding crimes committed on Indian soil and hence to demand his extradition. As both India and the US are bound by an extradition treaty, this right cannot be denied by the US as correctly advised by the Solicitor General of India. The US stand that it will make available a detailed report of his interrogation by the FBI,instead of allowing his extradition, cannot be accepted. Hence,India should warn the US that refusal to extradite Headley will be construed as an unfriendly act.

Hazard harvest

• It’s really a matter of shame that we don’t learn from tragic incidents of fire which occur every now and then in some part of the country or the other. Fire tenders always arrive late at the scene. And even if they arrive, they do not carry the required equipment. Meanwhile, many precious lives were lost in Kolkata, because of negligence. Concerned authorities instead indulged in a blame-game. The death toll could rise further. It’s also reported that two extra floors were illegally constructed in 1984 in the century-old building. More shameful is the fact that these illegal constructions were “regularised” after some time. If the building is so old,why in the first place were the extra floors regularised? Why were fire safety measures not checked at the time of “legalising” the illegal floors? Is it callousness or corruption? Only a few weeks ago,a similar tragedy was witnessed in Bangalore where nine people lost their lives due to no fault of theirs.

• One hopes the US doesn’t succumb to Pakistani pressure and gift Drones. Has the US forgotten the mistake of giving stinger missiles to the mujahideen? These were transferred to the Taliban when the two merged to take control of Afghanistan. F-16s and the Drones,if given to Pakistan, will finally fall into the hands of terrorists, for Pakistan has its own agenda after the Americans leave Afghanistan, willingly or forced to. Pakistan is also known to use American weapons against India.

In memoriam

• In the death of Mohan Wagh,we have lost a towering personality of Marathi literature,a gigantic theatre personality and a veteran journalist. He was the founder of Chandralekha Theatre Institute which is a pioneer Marathi film and drama promotion academy. Many people may have known him as the father-in-law of Raj Thackeray but Mohan Wagh was a doyen of Marathi theatre.
