True pioneer

* This refers to ‘Midday tragedy’ (IE,July 19),which mentions that “Tamil Nadu under M.G. Ramachandran, pioneered the midday meal”. I would like to point out that it was actually K. Kamaraj, the chief minister of Madras for three terms, from 1954 to 1963,who first pioneered the midday meal scheme in Tamil Nadu’s primary schools. MGR,who was CM of Tamil Nadu from 1977 to 1987,expanded this scheme

into “MGR’s Nutritious Meal Scheme” in 1982.

It is unfortunate that school children have become the victims of this salutary scheme, tarnishing its image.

Critical fact

* Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that he could not disclose any information the government obtained from the US about what David Headley may have said on Ishrat Jahan. There is still a great lack of clarity in this case. We must know whether Ishrat Jahan was really connected with the ISI-sponsored Lashkar-e-Toiba,which has been involved in many terror attacks in India. This fact

is extremely important, not just for the case at hand, but to settle much larger questions, ranging from the checks on intelligence agencies to the secular nature of certain political players.

* I welcome the Supreme Court’s direction that sellers of acid must maintain detailed records of buyers (‘Make acid attacks a non-bailable offence: SC’,IE,July 19). As per the SC’s ruling, sellers will also have to be licenced and selling to minors will be prohibited. The court has also stipulated the amount to be paid to victims as compensation. This ruling is remarkable and it is,hopefully, going to reduce the number of acid attacks. But we still need society to alter fundamentally in order to see a deeper, more meaningful change.

* It IS one thing to be proud of the religion to which one belongs, and to also be patriotic. But mixing religion and politics is dangerous. Marrying the two just doesn’t work. Narendra Modi needs to know this. As far as his analogy on the Gujarat riots is concerned,I wonder who the reckless driver of the car in Gujarat in 2002 was. And what action did he take against the driver, being the chief minister of the state? And would he have felt only dukh and sat casually in the backseat had it been an insaan ka rather than a “kutte ka bachcha”?
