Too centred

* The assessment in Shekhar Gupta’s ‘Delhi Disconnect’ (IE,May 21) of the Congress’s strategic flaws is both timely and precise. UPA 2 has proved to be shortsighted and complacent. The rise of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh can be attributed to the Congress’s overconfidence in its central leadership and discourteous attitude towards its regional leaders.

Three-step plan

* The Congress will have to do three things if it has to strengthen state-level leadership (‘Delhi Disconnect’,IE,May 21). The culture of succumbing to centralised leadership is deep-rooted in the party. A change in this has to be top-driven. Further, there is a big dearth of capable party leaders in crucial states like Uttar Pradesh,Bihar,Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. The party must choose potential leaders and groom them for key state positions. Lastly, the top leadership will have to adopt the policy of preferring performance to loyalty in identifying new leaders to bridge the merit deficit.

Map the change

* ‘Delhi Disconnect’ is correct on all aspects except the Left. The Left’s 34-year reign in West Bengal defied all logic. In the recent polls too,it did notch up an impressive 41 per cent of votes in Bengal and nearly pulled it off in Kerala. Political pundits should ask whether a Singur or a Nandigram could have jolted the state into going for an overnight “poribortan”. There could be much more to it. A study of the long red era of Bengal would be valuable. The next five years of non-Left rule may also throw up some answers to the enigma that is Bengal.

Two little

* The UPA has little reason to celebrate its two years in government (‘Probity the theme at UPA bash’,IE,May 23). By no stretch of imagination can its governance be called a success. Scam after scam tumbled out of the closet. Price of essential commodities shot up. If the UPA government has survived,it is because the opposition parties are in disarray.

Second thoughts

* This refers to ‘Hello Tata’ (IE,May 23). Mamata Banerjee had driven the Tatas out of Bengal. She may have turned a page now. But the Tatas will not be so naive to jump at her offer — once bitten, they will be twice shy. They will look at their long-term commercial interests in the state and weigh the consistency and durability of government policies before taking any decision.

Reality check

* Regarding the terrorist attack on Pakistan’s naval base, its government must understand that it cannot function till stringent action is taken against terrorists. It should stop supporting extremists in its country and those coming from Afghanistan.
