Your editorial ‘It’s complicated’ (IE,October 24) marks the strength of our established democratic institutions in sharp relief while facing civil movements. All the more reason why we ought to encourage such movements and their protagonists to imbibe greater maturity and focus. The present team of Anna Hazare did serve the purpose of bringing four decades of political inaction on an important subject to an end. It is now the turn of the elected representatives of the people to put out an effective law using their collective wisdom. The people, and not Hazare, will be judging them on the outcome.

Kiran Bedi’s statement that she will return the money obtained from her hosts through false representation is an acknowledgement of and some atonement for her misdeed, but it cannot absolve her of delinquency. If a pickpocket agrees to refund the money, will he be pardoned? Will (or should) the nation pardon Raja and Yeddyurappa if they agree to refund the ill-gotten money? Team Anna, who had done some good work in the past, have such a high opinion of themselves that now they consider themselves above norms applicable to lesser beings, and in the process they may derail the Lokpal bill. Anna Hazare is a simple person, and would do well to prolong his vow of silence rather than defend the indefensible and permit the Lokpal bill to become a casualty of the arrogance of the Bedis,Kejriwals and Bhushans.

Good work

This refers to the news report ‘India closest ever to eradicating polio: Govt’ (IE,October 24). The Union health ministry has done a commendable job in restricting the spread of polio. Regular programmes, advertisements and awareness on the ills of polio have helped accomplish a near complete target in the eradiation of polio. With a success rate of 99 per cent over a period of three years,WHO in conjunction with UNICEF would be able to certify India’s stupendous role in achieving freedom from the deadly disease. Hope we fulfil it for a healthy tomorrow.

Really,coach?

Greg Chappell’s description of Sachin Tendulkar as someone who was beset with “self-doubt” reminded me of Arjun’s state at the start of the battle in the Mahabharata. It is a sign of greatness that the best among us are unafraid to address our “weaknesses” and strive to overcome them. Ironically, the world knows Krishna as the divine narrator of the Bhagavad Gita — history,on the other hand, will speak of Sachin’s greatness while Chappell, for all his writings, will remain a footnote in the annals of cricket.
