This refers to the report “Comrade Hem’ was a just a scribe, say friends’ (IE,July 8). While the bereaved wife of Hem denies her husband had anything to do with the Maoists, leaders of the outfit claim he was an important functionary.

Anyway, truth appears to be the casualty. But is it necessary to be deferential to these thugs — the Maoists — who are making headlines? Agnivesh,Varavara Rao,Arundhati Roy,et al were not around to console the families of CRPF personnel who were massacred; but now, these intellectual worthies are all grieving for the “comrade(s)” who fell in police action. If anything, this is the height of hypocrisy.

Fooling whom?

This refers to ‘No fresh curbs on Hafiz Saeed, says Pakistan’ (IE,July 7). The fallout of the foreign secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan sounded like the breaking the ice. The subsequent meeting Home Minister P. Chidambaram had with Rehman Malik was also seen to be of some substance. Now,Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna is supposed to take it forward by placing terror on the platter. History shows that a government in Islamabad cannot survive without the blessings of fanatics and extremists. Unfortunately,Pakistan has been receiving financial and military aid from the US and assistance in building infrastructure from China. Hence, for Pakistan, waging its proxy war in Kashmir has become cheap. Who then is fooling whom?

Spain’s hour

My friend thought the law of averages would catch up with the octopus and Germany would beat Spain. Well, some heartbreaks as Germany lost and everybody thought the octopus was disloyal. However,Spain dominated the match and deserved to win. Spain’s economy is in crisis and one hopes their World Cup fortunes will be reflected in their economy. Coming to Paul, the octopus,he is worth his weight in gold. The punters must have made a fortune and, hopefully, the Germans will let him live and not put him on the dinner table.

Spain are clear favourites to win the cup and I hope they do. The Germans should gift the octopus to Spain which they would love to keep along with the Fifa trophy, should they win the latter.

Nothing to report

It’s very sad that the Jammu & Kashmir government has put curbs on the media in the state. The media acts as the fourth pillar of a functioning democracy and endeavours to be the voice of the people. Restraining the media is stifling the voice of the people. The Union government should review the decision and help the state government to normalise the law and order situation.
