Forward march

* This refers to ‘Disarming Kashmir’ by Shekhar Gupta (IE,December 7). The writer presents a convincing argument for thinning the army’s presence in Jammu and Kashmir, given the peace that has prevailed there for some time now. However,to claim that the Lashkars and the jihadis have been defeated in J&K,and are no longer a factor, seems a little premature. Gupta himself has written about several instances of army posts being attacked. All right-thinking Indians want the citizens of J&K to enjoy the peace, tranquility and rich opportunities that the rest of us are blessed with. The writer is right to support Narendra Modi’s call for a debate on Article 370. The government must decide exactly how it is going to “restore trust” with J&K and its people.

All eyes on AAP

* This refers to ‘Anti-Congress wave’ (IE,December 9). The news of the Congress’s comprehensive defeat in four state assembly elections brought good cheer to citizens who are fed up with it. But the warm feeling didn’t last long. The likelihood that there will be president’s rule and fresh elections in Delhi is high. The citizens of Delhi voted for the AAP in large numbers rather than choosing the NOTA option. It is good that they expressed support for a political newcomer and chastised the Congress. However,a hung assembly is of no use. Even though the BJP has emerged as the single largest party,it doesn’t look likely that it will be able to form government.

* The recent election results were really interesting. It is clear from the drubbing of the Congress and the fantastic performance of the AAP that people are itching for change. People are keen to get rid of the corrupt and inept Congress party. But the BJP is,in effect,no different — it is as corrupt. Though Arvind Kejriwal and his party lag behind in experience, with the support and trust of the voters they can learn how to govern. It’s high time for the Congress to introspect. As things stand, their prospects for the next general elections are not very bright.

Acid intervention

* This refers to ‘”Ex-boyfriend” throws acid on girl on wedding day’ (IE,December 8). Acid attacks are heinous crimes. State governments must come up with rules for the sale of acid as the Supreme Court has asked them to. The state must also be more proactive in helping victims with their medical care and expenses.
