Deplorable misogyny
* Ram Jethmalani,Asaram Bapus defence lawyer, has said that the girl who accused the so-called godman of sexual misdemeanours, was afflicted with a mental disorder that makes one feel like meeting men alone (Asaram to stay in jail till Sept 30; girl mentally unsound, says Jethmalani,IE,September 17). A.P. Singh, one of the defence lawyers in the December 16 Delhi gangrape case has remarked that he would have burnt his daughter alive had she been having premarital sex and moving around at night with her boyfriend. The brazenness of Jethmalani and Singh is shocking. Their misogynistic comments are disgusting.

No contest
* This refers to the editorial A false conflict (IE,September 19). It is true that Rahul Gandhi cannot match Narendra Modis oratorial skills as he is a political greenhorn. Gandhi is the Congresss vice president because of an accident of birth. Modi,on the other hand, has risen to become the prime ministerial candidate of his party through his own efforts and hard work. Gandhi must acquaint himself with the functioning of government. He has neither the experience nor the qualities of a good administrator, which is also why his speeches sound trite.

Good precedent
* By resigning from office, the Rajasthan food and civil supplies minister,Babu Lal Nagar, against whom the police had registered a case of rape, has set a good precedent (Rajasthan Minister Babu Lal Nagar resigns on moral ground over rape charge,IE,September 20). Normally, politicians facing similar charges would have refused to vacate office by arguing that they are innocent and are being targeted by their political adversaries. A free and fair probe should be conducted.

New wave
* This refers to the Bollywood take three by Karan Singh (IE,September 19). The writer is correct that there are very few contemporary mass-market movies that appeal to the artistic side of general audiences. Bollywood is widely criticised for its limited oeuvre. It is lamentable that even a century after the Indian film industry was born,Indians still have to look abroad to get their fill of art cinema. It is also curious that even though more than 1,300 movies are released in India every year, compared to Hollywoods 450,Indian films dont make a noticeable mark abroad, either commercially or at foreign film festivals. It is an encouraging sign that Bollywood directors are finally breaking the stereotype and making inventive movies. Is this Bollywoods new wave?
