* The latest FDI clearances in insurance and pensions indicate that the UPA government is eager to pander to big corporates in India and abroad (‘Banging on’,IE,October 5). Corporations abroad are interested because of the sheer size of the sectors and the volume of funds involved. This “second wave of reforms”,however, may have mixed success, given the weakening global economy, especially in Europe and the US. With the US in an election year, the corporations there may be holding back until the end of this year to firm up their investment plans. Why can we not support our insurance PSUs like the LIC and GIC? Despite its pitiable financial condition,we continue to believe that the West can nourish our economy. India appears to be in a better financial position. We need to pause and consolidate our economy, plug gaps in the system caused by bad governance and ensure the proper functioning of social welfare schemes like the MNREGA.

* ARVIND KEJRIWAL’S accusations against Robert Vadra cannot be brushed aside as wild allegations by a publicity seeker (‘Robert Vadra-Haryana-DLF nexus exists: Arvind Kejriwal’,IE,October 9). It is the responsibility of the media to press the government to initiate a judicial probe into the charges levelled against Vadra. The fact that all the big Congress leaders have lashed out at Kejriwal indicates that his allegations have made the party nervous.

No simple answer

* THIS refers to ‘Politics full of dirt: Hazare fires fresh salvo at Kejriwal’ (IE,October 1). This is simplistic.. Not all politics is dirty, and not all agitation is sacred. Countries do not run on agitations but on politics, which,no doubt, needs constant reform. It is,after all, politics that gave free India the ability to rule itself, politics that enabled Hazare to work with the panchayat of Ralegan Siddhi, politics that allows him to agitate peacefully. It is important to strike a balance between agitation and politics.

Take note

* THIS refers to ‘Fake notes, higher quantity and better quality’ (IE,October 12). I had also demanded information on this under the RTI Act. But citing various sections of the RTI Act,the concerned authorities refused to divulge important information, which the country has a right to have. How is it that currency notes are faked with precision and watermarks are replicated? I ask the authorities to give answers to the questions above so that each citizen of this country can help stop this menace. The government should have stringent measures to deal with the circulation of fake currency.
