Being professional
* A dentist by training,I was planning to join the civil services. I thought that only an administrative or political engagement would help me in bringing about a change in Indias overall grim scenario. However, after reading Jack out of the box (IE,August 10) by Pratap Bhanu Mehta,I am inspired to value my profession. He reminds us that before falling for the temptation of a total revolution,we should contribute to society by discharging the ethical obligations that define our professional roles.

* MANPREET BADAL,in Facing up to Wisconsin (IE,August 9),provided a fair account of the might and plight of American Sikhs. The hate crime at the gurdwara calls for a soul-searching by all Americans. US President Barack Obama ordered the American flag to be flown at half-staff at all government facilities at home and abroad to condole the killing. This would happen only in a nation that is proud of its citizens irrespective of their religious or ethnic identity.

Turning tables
* THE recent violence in Assam, which resulted in the death of about 80 people and the displacement of thousands, could have been avoided if the Union and state governments had been more vigilant. In a debate on the issue in Parliament, one expected the government to be on the defensive. However, the ruling party members, egged on by their leader Sonia Gandhi, went ballistic over an indiscreet remark made by L.K. Advani and turned the tables on the opposition, which resulted in the defeat of an adjournment motion. Thus the BJP lost a valuable opportunity to focus on the monumental failure of the governments Northeast policy. It is surprising that a veteran like Advani forgot parliamentary decorum The BJP might be wondering, who needs enemies when we have a friend like Advani.

Get a goal
* INDIAS hockey team could not successfully fight the opposition teams and score enough winning goals at the London Olympics. We were defeated by all four teams in the group New Zealand, the Netherlands,England and South Korea. Before the Olympics began, there was much talk about the new face of Indian hockey. We were counting our chickens before they hatched. We fail to convert penalty corners into goals: that is our main drawback. Our sporting infrastructure too needs an overhaul. We do not have AstroTurf at our main sporting facilities. So,India, which has won eight Olympic golds in hockey, struggled to beat even weak teams. From Chak de India of the Dhyan Chand days,it has degenerated to Choked India.
