The conduct of any public figure is expected to be exemplary. IPL is cricketainment and taxes are being paid to government. Therefore, the IPL is definitely in the public domain and should always stand to public scrutiny. No objection can be raised about ownership, which should be declared openly. It should be compulsory to divulge details, including owners, financiers, bankers, administrators. The accounts should also be audited to ascertain the source of finances and expenditures.

No alternative
The callous attitude of the Union and state governments towards empowerment of Adivasis,STs and other minorities has resulted in a socio-economic wedge between them and the progressing rest of India (Call it team spirit,IE,April 16). The deep resentment of such marginalised communities, after losing livelihood and forest access due to destruction and exploitation by vested interests has resulted in the present surge of Maoist militancy. Green Hunt has suffered some reverses, but no right-minded people have challenged Union Home Minister P. Chidambarams competency. Digvijay Sighs comments come when paramilitary and police operation is the only course of action. Therefore, the empowerment of Adivasis and a development package for STs can wait. The present situation amounts to a challenge to the very existence of the democratic Indian state.

India suffered its largest single-day casualty at the hands of Maoists in Dantewada. As per reports, more such attacks cant be ruled out in future. This is a total failure of the intelligence and police machinery in anticipating and preventing such attacks. Regrettably, the Union government has been prone to passing the responsibility on to state governments. The tribal people whom Maoists claim to be fighting for are their worst victims. Government policies are detrimental for the tribal people as large tracts of land have been given to MNCs for mining operations. The displacement of tribal people, their loss of livelihood and habitats are a direct result of these policies. The need of the hour is to fight the Maoists politically and ideologically. Proper coordination between the Union and the states on one hand and state police and paramilitary forces on the other to check this menace is needed. The brutal attack is a reminder that no state government can singly tackle the violence perpetrated by Maoists.

Raid them all
The raid on the IPL headquarters was the right step to unravel the truth. The government must not stop at that for its a racket with international ramifications. All stakeholders must be raided before they move their loot to foreign banks. Smart businessmen have been polishing off crores of rupees in the name of promoting a game which has almost lost its original form and is not even a shadow of itself.
