The Maoist problem is…? If you are a thinking Indian struggling to give a coherent answer to this question,an answer that’s short but covers everything, try this: “It’s (the Maoist problem) a major socio-economic,political,caste,class,development,governance issue.” There! Sometime in 2010 the Maoist problem was thus explained to we the people in one of the episodes of We the People. I had missed it,even as Maoist violence throughout last year kept posing the question. So,thank you NDTV for starting 2011 with the best of 2010 We the People compilation.

This year I feel I’m intellectually far better armed when confronted with our country’s problems. For example, what is the Telangana problem? It’s a major socio-economic,political,caste,class,development,governance issue. See! Can you argue against it? The super thing about this is its wondrous applicability. Suppose someone asks you at a party, what’s the major problem confronting India in 2011? You say, gravely,it’s a major socio-economic,political,caste,class,development,governance issue. If your interlocutor is one of those annoying types, and tells you but that can be said about almost anything, you say, quite, that’s the point. If the other fellow persists, say, listen this was on We the People and it was picked by NDTV as one of the best bits of all 2010 episodes. To shut the other fellow up,tell him some of the other We the People best bits as chosen by NDTV.

For example,Manish Tewari,my favourite TV politician,in an episode on CWG corruption, his left hand sweeping from right to left,as he says, let’s not say as if o-o-one bi-i-ig scam has been perpetrated. This is followed by Tewari using both his hands to give us some sense of a vast space and then saying,(it’s not as if) the entire games have been thrown into the Bay of Bengal. Indian broadcast journalism and Manish Tewari have found in each other o-o-one bi-i-ig common ground. In another NDTV pick, from another episode where they the anchor/panellists and they the audience provided,as NDTV judged it,another coruscating critique of corruption,a panellist asked, how long will the public take this cr**? How very thoughtful of NDTV to have picked this as part of its best of the last year selections. Presumably,we can’t get enough of hearing “cr**” on TV.

A live-in relationship is like a test drive, this was another pick, from a We the People chat on — obviously — live-in relationships. Somewhat less obvious,to me at least,is why NDTV thought this was worth picking. The anchor ticked off the chap who made that comparison, end of that chap’s few seconds of TV appearance, right? But,no,NDTV editors, poring over We the People episodes, presumably thought if we have a clip of a chap who seems to be comparing women to cars (the anchor ticked him off, remember) we must show it again, that was one of our best moments. Wow!

What’s the problem here? Is it a major socio-economic,political,caste,class,development,governance issue? I don’t think that answer applies to news TV editorial calls, does it? I mean we the people are in o-o-one bi-i-ig trouble if that’s the case. It isn’t. I am positive. So,the problem is…?
