Keeping track of this week’s snakes and ladder score
Up:
Forest Conservation, As the Bhamburda forests are likely to become a no-construction zone. State Minister for Forests Chandrakant Khaire stayed the construction of bungalows for forest officials in the area. Sending a green signal to the preservation of the area’s ecology?
City Traffic Conditions, As the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation may go ahead with its ambitious project of building flyovers all over the city. With 16 flyovers tentatively planned, it will be a major boon for the city roads that have been bogged down by chaos and utter disarray.
Intelligence Gathering, With the city police planning a complete overhaul of its intelligence apparatus. Constant surveillance, use of mohalla committees, grass-root information gathering (such as travel agencies, real estate agents) are the watchwords to the new intelligence gathering set up. Intelligent move, huh?
Local Self-Government, As the election for the lone seat of the legislative council had a record 99.6 per cent voter turn out. Of the 542 voters, only two did not show up on the polling day.
Women’s Upliftment, As the Stree Adhar Kendra and the United Nations Global Fund for Women has worked out a Rs. 2 lakh project for highlighting and arresting violence against women in Pune and Mumbai. The project aims to bring succour to women who are harassed in a marriage.
Down:
Celestial Fireworks, With the dud that the much-touted Tempel-Tuttle meteor shower turned out to be. It came, it saw and it crashed. The cloud cover was bad enough for the average stargazer, and what was expected to be a shower turned out to be drizzle. A good night’s sleep is advised the next time round.
Slaughter Houses, As the facelift of the slaughter house at Kondhwa has been put on the backburner due to lack of funds. With the Central Government holding back funds from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which is planning a new slaughter house at Manjari, things have gone totally awry.
The Postal Department, With The Indian Express highlighting scores of postcards that come in with uncancelled stamps. These stamps, when recycled, cause immense loss to the department. Yes, it’s our job to keep them posted!
Women’s Safety, When in a shocking incident at Pimpri Chinchwad, a girl WAS insulted and physically abused by a six-seater auto-rickshaw driver. What’s worse, the crowd remained mute spectators to the whole incident. To add insult to injury, the accused reportedly got away with a token punishment.
Hawkers, As the PMC terminated the licences of the hawkers in the city and issued orders for their eviction. Twenty-two important junctions have been identified for their eviction, including places like Laxmi Road and Jedhe chowk.
