April 26: Agradneya Vyayamshala, Dombivli, beat Savios 45-10 in the boys quarter-finals of the 9th DB Prabhu Memorial Sub-jr basketball tournament, sponsored by Colgate, at Indian Gymkhana today.
Both teams were locked 4-4 in the first quarter, but the second quarter was dominated by the winners, especially the speedy Ninad Katre. Ninad scored six of his team’s seven points in the quarter, while Savios went scoreless. Ninad’s presence made all the difference in the last quarter, as Agradneya took the match beyond Savio’s grasp.
In another quarter-final, favourites Wellingdon YMCA A edged out Good Counsel 47-43 in a rough game. Both the teams concentrated on committing fouls, a trend which has long been the bane of minis basketball. The match saw a total 61 foul Wellingdon accounted for 33, Good Counsel 28.
Wellingdon had it easy till the third quarter, enjoying a ten-point lead. But they succumbed to the man-to-man marking unleashed by Good Counsel in the last quarter. The score ran neck and neck till the last minute but time ran out on Good Counsel. Eight players of both the teams five frm Wellingdon and three from Good Counsel had to leave the court after committing five personal fouls.
