Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and Leader of Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu locked horns again over farmer suicides in the state. This is the third instance when the two leaders had a face-off during this Assembly session.

While replying to questions raised by the Opposition MLAs and Naidu on farmers suicides, the Chief Minister lost his cool and accused Naidu of exaggerating and creating panic.

With your rhetoric and actions, you are demoralising the farmers. While there have been only two confirmed incidents of farmers suicide in the last six months, you are claiming that 165 have committed suicide. Twenty-five farmers had committed suicide in the last 50 days of your TDP rule because you decided to play politics over drought, Reddy said.

Naidu, meanwhile, stuck to his stand and furnished a list that he claimed were the names of the farmers who had ended their lives in the past 50 days. He took potshots at Reddy and said that during the TDP rule,YSR was the Opposition leader and he had then claimed in the Assembly that 3,000 farmers had committed suicide and had politicised it by asking Congress president Sonia Gandhi to visit the state. You even took her to Anantapur district. You collected donations in the name of distributing it to the affected families, Naidu said.

Naidu also quoted the report of Ramachanna Reddy Commission, set up by the Congress government, which found that around 1000 farmers had ended their lives during the TDP regime. Naidu claimed that over 5,500 farmers had ended their lives in the past five years of the Congress rule. The CM decided to ignore the Oppositions comments and went ahead with his clarifications.
