A young woman impersonating a man was exposed after being arrested on charges of siphoning off money from the firm where she employed as a sales manager.

Police at Kottiyam in Kollam district on Saturday arrested Rani,29,who allegedly misappropriated Rs 5 lakh from a marble dealer, after winning his confidence as an enthusiastic and honest sales manager. Rani was charged under various sections of the IPC,said investigating officer Muhammed Khan.

The officer said Rani, belonging to a lower middle class family, thought that by acting like a man she would be entrusted with lucrative postings and be able to make quick money in order to get a ‘modern’ house. Rani joined the marble showroom five months back as ‘Sreekanth’. Within two months, she was promoted to the post of a manager.

Last week, the owner stumbled upon certain discrepancies in the accounts, casting suspicion over the entire staff. Following a complaint, the police asked all employees to turn up at the local station for interrogation where ‘Sreekanth’ failed to report.

The police went to the address provided by Rani and showed her father Sreekanth’s photograph,he identified Rani.

After Rani confessed to the charade, she was subjected to a gender test at the hospital.

The police said Rani had worked with several firms in the past as a man.
