A former railway minister visiting the current incumbent at Rail Bhavan perhaps nothing to write home about. However, its not everyday that Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee climbs down two floors from her Rail Bhavan office to stand 10 minutes at the VIP entrance gate to wait for a guest, and then escort them back to her chambers.

On Monday, she made that exception, for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The bonhomie was evident when they emerged from their meeting half an hour later too, with Mamata prodding Nitish to take the centrestage before the waiting cameras. Aaj aapka din hai,aap boliye, she told him.

Nitish said he had urged the minister that the many pending railway projects in Bihar be speeded up,an institutional mechanism be set up at the state level to monitor such projects and that the Patna-Digha rail line be handed over to the state government for conversion into a four-lane road. Mamata,he said, had assured him that all the matters would be examined.

However, not much later,Nitish found himself talking of arch rival Lalu Prasad Yadav. Slamming Lalus jhootha prachar,he said the damage the RJD chief had done to the Railways would be judged by generations to come. He praised Mamata for the work done by her in the first 100 days of the government.

Mamata,on her part, promised to work with Nitish. We will work together for development. We will give all cooperation to Nitishji. He has asked me to visit Bihar,Ill go to Bihar soon, she said.

When asked to comment on Nitishs remarks on Lalu, she chose not to comment.
