The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) on Thursday announced a series of mass movements across Punjab and other parts of the country against what it termed as “anti-farmer” and “anti-worker” laws and policies of the central and Punjab governments.
The decisions were taken at a meeting held at Kisan Bhawan, Chandigarh on Thursday. The announcement followed an inconclusive meeting between the Punjab chapter of KMM and the Punjab government officials at Punjab Bhawan on Wednesday, after which a follow-up meeting was convened at Gurdwara Amb Sahib, Mohali, under the chairmanship of Manjit Singh Rai, Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of KMM, said.
The protest group also unveiled its schedule of the demonstrations, some of which include:
On January 13, copies of the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, Seed Law 2025, and VB – G RAM G will be burnt in Lohri bonfires at the village-level across Punjab.
On January 21 and 22, smart meters will be removed and deposited at nearby electricity offices as part of the second phase of protests.
On January 18, during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Majitha (Amritsar), protests will be held raising questions over the forcible lifting of the Shambhu–Khanauri morcha, alleged theft of trollies, and other pending demands.
On February 5, sit-in protests will be organised outside the residences of Punjab ministers and MLAs.
Addressing mediapersons, KMM leaders claimed that the government was evading responsibility for compensating losses suffered during the Shambhu–Khanauri morchas, despite consensus having been reached earlier on several demands.
Some of the major demands of the protest group include compensation and government jobs for families of farmers and workers who died during the agitations, withdrawal of cases related to stubble burning, red entries, penalties, and immediate release of pending compensation to farmers affected by floods.
