Two months after the dramatic transfer of power in Maldives, the new foreign minister of Maldives,Abdul Samad Abdullah, will brief the Indian government about the situation in the country and also inform it about the forthcoming visit of Maldives President Mohammed Waheed Hassan, being planned in the month of May,sources said.
Abdullah, who landed here today,is set to meet External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Tuesday, according to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin. He will discuss issues pertaining to political stability and progress on talks on early elections.
Sources said he is expected to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and National Security Advisor Shivshanker Menon. Abdullah also met the envoys of several countries, which do not have embassies in Maldives.
In his talks,Krishna is expected to press his Maldivian counterpart to stick to the roadmap which was unveiled by Waheed and endorsed by key political parties.
Meanwhile, former Maldives president Mohammed Nasheed is also expected to come to India in mid-April. I will go to India in the middle of next month and plan to meet as many political leaders as possible, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Nasheed said in the US last week, adding that he hoped that India will come around and support his efforts in restoring democracy in the Maldives.
In the wake of the transfer of power in February,India had sent Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai twice to assess the situation and help mediate a political settlement among feuding political parties. Mathai helped broker a deal which envisaged a broad consensus for early elections in a quick time frame.
