Ten staffers at an eatery in Daund taluka of Pune district were injured, five of them critically, after a cooking gas cylinder exploded in the kitchen on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
No customers were present at the time of the incident. All the injured were staff members who were working in the kitchen or nearby and sustained burn injuries, officials said.
According to Pune Rural police, the explosion occurred around 1 pm at Hotel Jagdamba on Daund–Patas Road, about 75 km from Pune city. Most of the injured staffers are migrant workers, police added.
The blast triggered a fire in the kitchen, which was brought under control by the Daund Municipal Council fire brigade. The explosion caused extensive damage to the roof, windows, furniture and kitchen equipment.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Baburao Dadas said, “Initial observations show that one of the multiple cooking gas cylinders in the kitchen exploded, injuring 10 staffers. Five of the injured have critical burn injuries to vital organs and have been admitted to Sassoon General Hospital in Pune, others are being treated at hospitals in Daund.”
Dadas added, “The exact cause of the blast is being ascertained. We will be seeking reports from forensic experts and the fire brigade. Based on the reports, further investigation will be conducted. We will probe whether all safety precautions were taken in the kitchen or not.
