The Special Investigation Team SIT probing the Ishrat Jahan encounter case claimed to have found that both the alleged Pakistani terrorists who were shot dead along with Ishrat and Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Shaikh had faked their identities as Kashmiris.
Ishrat and Javed were killed in a police encounter in Ahmedabad on June 15,2004 along with two other men Jisan Johar and Abdul Ghani alias Amzad Ali.
The court-appointed SIT from Gujarat was in Jammu and Kashmir for five days to look into the antecedents of these two men in Srinagar. Though the police here had earlier claimed them to be Pakistanis belonging to the LeT,it was subsequently questioned.
The team visited all the important places in Srinagar to hunt for their links in Kashmir. Ghani and Johar carried fake identity papers to pass off as locals of Udhampur in Kashmir. They had got those made locally in Srinagar, and stayed in Kashmir for a while before meeting up with Ishrat and Javed, an SIT officer requesting anonymity said.
