Unidentified gunmen shot at valleys prominent cardiologist and former Director of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences SKIMS,Dr Sheikh Jalal,in Pampore town at around 4 pm on Thursday. The incident took place when Jalal was moving near his house at Nambla in Pampore.

While Jalal suffered bullet wounds in his left eye and abdomen,his two personal security officers PSOs were killed on the spot. The cardiologist was shifted to SKIMS hospital where he was operated upon.

SKIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Farooq said Jalal was brought to hospital in a critical state. He has sustained bullet injuries in his left eye and abdomen. He is being operated by a team of doctors and next 24-48 hours are very crucial for him.

Farooq said when Jalal was brought to the hospital he was conscious and talking. Though his condition is critical,we are optimistic he will recover, he said. IGP Kashmir,Abdul Gani Mir,said three militants fired on Jalal and his two PSOs.

Jalal was the Director of SKIMS for five years and had close contacts in political parties. His wife is daughter of former Congress minister Late Ghulam Mohammad Rajpuri. Jalal was also close to PDP patron and former Jamp;K chief minister Mufti Mohammad Syed. He was not directly affiliated with any mainstream political party.

The police said they have no idea why Jalal was attacked. The attack comes a day after suspected militants hurled a grenade on a police vehicle at Batamaloo killing a Hizbul Mujahideen under trial militant and injuring four policemen and a civilian. Meanwhile,the police have launched a manhunt to track down the three militants.
