Three states in Northeast get separate high courts

Three states of the Northeastern region Meghalaya,Manipur and Tripura have finally got their respective high courts with Chief Justice of India Alamtas Kabir

Three states of the Northeastern region Meghalaya,Manipur and Tripura have finally got their respective high courts with Chief Justice of India Alamtas Kabir formally inaugurating two of them,in Shillong and Imphal,on Monday. The Tripura High Court will be inaugurated Tuesday.

Speaking in Shillong,the CJI said the three high courts was the fulfillment of a long overdue pledge in the Constitution that each state should have its own high court. Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar said separate high courts for the three states will bring justice to the doorsteps of the people and ensure credible and expeditious justice and justice according to the traditions,local customs and realities of this area.

While Justice T Meena Kumari,a Patna High Court judge from Andhra Pradesh,has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Meghalaya,Justice Deepak Gupta,from Himachal Pradesh,has been named Chief Justice of Tripura. Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre,a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court,has been sworn in as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

Now,only Nagaland,Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh are left with outlying benches of the Gauhati High Court,which has since its establishment in 1948 had jurisdiction over the entire Northeast.
