Last Sunday, after the Congress Core Group decided that Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor should step down, the message was conveyed to him by Defence Minister A K Antony. When the diplomat-turned-politician called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh late in the evening, the second time that day,to hand over his resignation letter, the PM told him that he had been left with no choice as his advisors were of the opinion that it was the only way to unlock the jam in Parliament caused by opposition parties. Incidentally, among the top leaders involved in deciding the fate of Tharoor,Antony was the most vocal, making a case for propriety in view of public perception. Tharoor could have only his aides to blame, who often made tall claims like him being the frontrunner as the partys chief ministerial candidate in Kerala.
