Dance movies have a following of their own. The Step Up series is no exception. Step Up 3D features Moose and Camille Gage protagonists from the earlier installments. The third installment in the Step Up trilogy is the first to be shot in 3-D.
Moose and Camille, head to New York University, the former is majoring in electrical engineering after promising his mother that he would not dance anymore. However,he soon stumbles upon a dance battle, where he meets a wannabe filmmaker Luke and his House of Pirates dance crew. He is back on the floor with his nifty moves. Moose teams up with the Pirates to compete in the World Jam dance contest against their rivals, the House of Samurai dance crew. But all this doesnt come without the regular hiccups.
Director Jon M. Chu starts of in the traditional video style,as several of the films characters are interviewed on camera about why they dance. Scriptwriters Amy Adelson and Emily Meyer havent stepped out of the box so the plotline remains flaccid. The director has resorted to visuals and 3-D to lift up the film.
The real stars of Step Up 3D are the choreographers. Armed with an arsenal of balloons, bubbles, spraying water,lasers,chalk-dust and anything else that might look awesome in 3-D,they have pulled out all the stops to crowd-pleasing effect. With its visually- enhanced choreography,Step Up 3D is a marvel to watch as director Jon Chu glides his camera effortlessly. Not since the MGM musicals of the 30s and 40s has dance been given such a dynamic, radical reinvention. The final dance sequence is a tribute to the vintage musicals, made awesome by 3-D.
Step Up 3D proves that a non-action entertainment can make brilliant use of the added dimension to bring something new to the visual mix.
Rating: One star for direction and camerawork. One for stunning dance sequences and 3-D.
