The Patna fast-track court of Judge K M Srivastava on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment Ranjit alias Gulshan and six others in connection with the murder of retired Railway Deputy Inspector General of Police Anil Kumar Singh. The court had convicted them on March 16.

Additional Public Prosecutor Jayprakash Singh said the court handed out the strong verdict because the seven people had committed a dastardly crime.

Anil Kumar Singh was travelling between Rajinder Nagar and Patna on the Mumbai-bound Patna-Kurla Superfast Express on June 4,2006 when he was shot while resisting a robbery bid by the seven criminals in an AC-II compartment. Singh, though he was bleeding profusely, continued to hold on to one of the criminals,Ranjit, till the police arrived.

Ranjit later disclosed the names of his six accomplices. Singh succumbed to his injuries the same day at Patna Medical College and Hospital. Singh’s wife,daughter-in-law and grandson, who were travelling with him, were unhurt in the incident.
