Samvat Year 2067 got off to a flying start today with the BSE benchmark Sensex surging past the crucial 21,000 points mark at a special Muhurat session,driven by the buoyant mood of fund and retail investors keen to usher in the new year with a bang.
The BSE benchmark index ended at 21,004.96 points,up 111.39 points or 0.53 per cent.
The Sensex,which closed at the record level of 20,893.57 points in the previous session,surged by another 215.07 points in opening trade to 21,108.64,a level last seen 34 months ago on January 10,2008.
Though Friday was a national holiday,stock exchanges held a special truncated trading session to allow brokers and investors to make token stock purchases during the one-hour trading session on Diwali,the festival of light and the start of the Hindu new year.
The broadbased National Stock Exchange index Nifty also regained the 6,300 points level today,to settle at 6,312.45 points,up 30.65 points or 0.49 per cent.
