Acting on a tip-off,the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI on Monday arrested a top income tax officer from Ahmedabad for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from a builder.
A senior CBI official in Gandhinagar said,Additional commissioner of income tax C S Bharti was trapped this evening for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 30 lakh for scrutiny and assessment of income tax returns of a construction firm.
The bribe was collected by a middleman in Ahmedabad on the instructions of the officer, the official said.
Bharti,a 1994-batch Indian Revenue Service officer,had been serving as additional commissioner of income tax in Gandhinagar for over two years.
CBI officials said the builder had approached the CBI two months ago,alleging that Bharti had been asking for a bribe of Rs 30 lakh for clearing his papers related to income tax assessment.
A trap was laid and the middleman was asked to come to Ahmedabad to collect the money from the builder.
