Unnerved by the presence of Muslims in Chief Minister Narendra Modis three-day Sadbhavna Mission fast, the state Congress is trying to woo the minorities back into its fold.
On Wednesday, state Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia announced the setting up of his partys minority cells at the taluka level. The party will also set up minority complaint cells right up to villages. This is the first such move by the Congress, which has been assuming that the minority votes were in its kitty.
Modhwadia announced his decision at the state Congress minority cell meeting convened in Ahmedabad.
For the record, party leaders denied it was a kneejerk reaction to Modis recent mission of amity and his announcement to take his Sadbhavana Mission to the districts by fasting for a day amid people.
However, some of them admitted in private that the implications of the Muslim presence in the Modi meet, something that has happened on this scale for the first time in Gujarat, were discussed with the Muslim leaders in the party.
The BJP is trying to create a split within the Muslims, wooing certain sects, which could be a part of its electoral strategy, said Wazir Khan, the Congress minority cell president.
At todays meeting,Modhwadia told the Muslim leaders that we will set up 428 units of the partys minority cell in every district, taluka, nagar palika and municipal corporation, with a total of 4,280 office-bearers to mobilise the minorities.
This is the first time that the Congress has resorted to openly mobilising minorities.
